Sixth-semester students of the Communication Science Study Program at Universitas Gajayana (UNIGA) Malang demonstrated their professional competencies by organizing the 2026 East Java News Anchor Competition on Monday (July 13, 2026). The event served as a practical implementation of the Event Management course, designed to provide students with hands-on experience in planning, managing, and evaluating professional events.

The 2026 East Java News Anchor Competition was organized as a platform for high school/vocational school (SMA/SMK) students and university students across East Java to hone their skills in journalism, public speaking, and broadcasting. Through this competition, participants were encouraged to showcase their ability to deliver information accurately, persuasively, and in accordance with journalistic standards.

Unlike typical broadcasting competitions, all participants were required to draft their news scripts independently prior to presenting them before the board of judges. This requirement presented a unique challenge, as participants were evaluated not only on their delivery techniques but also on their ability to process facts into coherent, informative, and news-worthy scripts.

Behind the scenes, the sixth-semester UNIGA Communication Science students acted as the organizing committee, managing the entire event lifecycle—from concept development, proposal drafting, media publicity, and participant coordination to judge liaison, guest relations, and execution. This practical learning approach was structured to equip students with managerial, communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.

The event was attended by the Head of the Communication and Information Office of Kota Batu, Ipung Setiawan, S.E., M.M., and the Head of the Communication Science Study Program at UNIGA Malang, Muhammad Asnan, S.Sos., M.I.Kom. Their presence highlighted institutional support for student initiatives that deliver academic value while contributing to youth skill development in communication and broadcasting.

In his opening remarks, Muhammad Asnan emphasized that modern university students must go beyond mastering classroom theory. He noted that balancing academic knowledge with practical experience is vital to preparing competent graduates who can adapt to workforce demands. Through events like the News Anchor Competition, students gain opportunities to apply their studies and develop professional acumen while still on campus.

The competition was evaluated by a panel of judges comprising Rahmawati, S.I.Kom., CPS.; Irfani Zukrufillah, S.Sos., M.I.Kom.; and Novi Ratriningtyas, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom. Judging was conducted objectively based on script quality, material mastery, delivery technique, articulation, intonation, expression, posture, and professional poise.

Following rigorous evaluation, Rachel Aurellia Silvan from SMA Kristen Petra 2 Surabaya secured 1st Place in the High School/Vocational School category. 2nd Place was awarded to Bunga Arsistawa from SMA Ma’arif NU Pandaan, while Revlin Armanda Dewi from SMKN 1 Kota Malang claimed 3rd Place.

In the University Student category, Viana Putri Aisyah from Universitas Negeri Surabaya won 1st Place. 2nd Place was secured by Naufilla Tsania Fatihah Al-Madani from Universitas Terbuka, followed by Sylvia Aprillia Permata Sari from Universitas Kadiri in 3rd Place.

The successful execution of the 2026 East Java News Anchor Competition reflects the practical learning approach embraced by the Communication Science Study Program at Universitas Gajayana Malang. Through the Event Management course, students gain more than theoretical insights; they acquire direct experience in designing and executing regional-scale competitions. This experience is expected to bolster student professional capabilities while reinforcing the program’s commitment to providing applicable, innovative, and community-benefiting education.
